Equipment

  • 1 Cast Iron Skillet

Ingredients

  • 3 large Eggs
  • ½ cup All-purpose flour
  • ½ cup Milk
  • 1 tbsp Granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp Vanilla extract
  • ¼ tsp Salt
  • 2 tbsp Unsalted butter

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Place a 10-inch cast-iron skillet or oven-safe skillet in the oven while it preheats.
  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, flour, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, and salt until well combined. The batter should be smooth and free of lumps.
  • Carefully remove the hot skillet from the oven and add the butter. Swirl the skillet to ensure the butter coats the bottom and sides evenly, allowing it to melt completely.
  • Pour the batter into the hot skillet. The butter will sizzle and create a beautiful golden crust.
  • Place the skillet back in the oven and bake for approximately 20-25 minutes, or until the Dutch Baby is puffed up and golden brown.
  • Once done, remove the skillet from the oven and let the Dutch Baby cool for a few minutes. It will deflate slightly, which is normal.
  • Serve the Dutch Baby warm, either directly from the skillet or transfer it onto a serving platter. Dust it with powdered sugar and top it with your favorite fruits, such as berries or sliced bananas, for an extra burst of flavor.

Tips and Tricks for Baking the Perfect Dutch Baby

To ensure your Dutch Baby turns out perfect every time, keep these tips and tricks in mind:
  1. Use a hot skillet: Preheating the skillet ensures that the butter melts quickly and evenly, creating a beautiful golden crust on the Dutch Baby.
  2. Be patient: Avoid opening the oven door while the Dutch Baby is baking. The sudden change in temperature can cause it to deflate or cook unevenly.
  3. Use room temperature ingredients: Allowing the eggs and milk to come to room temperature before using them in the batter helps create a smooth and consistent texture.
  4. Don't overmix the batter: Mix the batter until the ingredients are just combined. Overmixing can lead to a dense Dutch Baby instead of a light and airy one.
  5. Customize the baking time: Adjust the baking time based on your desired level of crispness. A shorter baking time will result in a softer Dutch Baby, while a longer baking time will yield a crisper one.
